Instructions
Preparing the Chana Dal
Let's place the chana dal in a bowl and pour two cups of water into it. We will leave the chana dal for two-three hours as this will soften the Dal.
After soaking the dal, let's put it into a cooking pot and place the pot into the hub. Let's also add in some salt and turmeric powder. Close the lid for ten minutes on a medium flame. After ten minutes, let check the Dal and give the Dal a good mix.
Again, close the lid for ten minutes, the dal should now be cooked well. We can check the softness of the dal using our hands.
Preparing the Base
In an empty cooking pot, pour in the oil and then add all the garam masala ingredients. Allow the ingredients to cook for about 30 seconds. Next, let's add the ginger paste and garlic paste. Make sure to give the pot a good mix after adding in the ingredients.
Now let's add in the fried onions and again give the pot a good mix. Let's add a cup of water to prevent the onion from burning.
We can not start to add in our spices. Let's add Turmeric powder, spicy red chilli powder, red chilli powder, Coriander powder and Cuming powder. Let's also add the salt and give the pot a good mix. Ensure that all the spices and ingredients from earlier are mixed entirely.
The paste might get a little dry. If you feel that the paste is a little dry then you can add some water to ensure that it does not get too dry and burn.
Let's continue to mix the masala paste for 3 to 4 minutes.
Preparing for the Chana Dal
With our paste now ready, let's add in the Tomato puree and give the pot a good mix. Now let's add our key ingredient, the chana dal. Once added, mix the chana dal ensuring that it is fully covered with the masala paste.
Let's also add some water to give a little texture to the Chana dal and to ensure that it does not burn. Now let's close the lid between 10-12 minutes.
Checking the Chana Dal
After 10-12 minutes, remove the lid and the Chana Dal should start to look like it's ready to serve. Before serving, however, let's add in a handful of extra ingredients to make the dish that much more tasty.
Let's add the red and green peppers. We can also add our fresh cur coriander to seal in a fresh taste to the dish. Give the dal a final mix and it should now be ready to serve.
